Everyone sweats. It’s how our bodies regulate body temperature and it’s completely normal. But sometimes sweating gets out of hand. Excessive sweating can be annoying or even embarrassing. You may think carefully about every outfit, apply deodorant constantly, and worry about what others might think. 

If this sounds familiar, you have another solution: Botox.
## What is Excessive Sweating?
Excessive or abnormal sweating is called hyperhidrosis. This could be sweating when it’s cold or sweating far more than necessary to regulate your temperature. People with hyperhidrosis may sweat through their clothes or even drip sweat. Excessive sweating may be localized to one area, like under the armpits. But it can also affect large areas of the body, such as the chest, hands, or feet.

Regular antiperspirants and deodorants don’t stop excessive sweating. Hyperhidrosis can be very upsetting and socially isolating, and there are few treatment options.
## Does Botox Reduce Sweating?
Botox for excessive underarm sweating has FDA approval. It’s a safe and effective treatment option that can dry up sweat. 

When Botox is injected into the underarms, it can stop sweating before it starts. Botox blocks signals from the brain to the overactive sweat glands. The sweat glands never get the message to produce sweat, and you’ll enjoy dry underarms. According to the International Hyperhidrosis Society, Botox is extremely effective at reducing underarm sweating. They report that Botox reduces underarm sweating by 82 - 87%.

Botox treatments have localized results. It only blocks signals in the area where it’s been injected. So if you have overactive sweat glands in another area you’ll need Botox injections in that area as well.
## How Long Does It Last?
Botox is not effective right away. It usually takes two to four days after treatment to notice a change in sweating. And it may take up to two weeks to reach its full effect.

Botox isn’t permanent. Depending on the dose and the injection site, Botox for excessive sweating can last anywhere from five to twelve months. Most adults with excessive underarm sweating schedule regular injections to maintain results. 
## What to Expect During An Appointment
A certified nurse can offer Botox for excessive sweating. Appointments usually last under 20 minutes. This is more than enough time to inject both underarms or any other areas of concern.

During the appointment, a small amount of botulinum toxin is injected in the armpit. Botox has a very localized result, so you’ll get several injections across the underarm area. Usually, you’ll get injections in a grid pattern in the armpit area, usually 0.5 inches apart. This grid pattern ensures that Botox will reach all the overactive sweat glands, so the entire area stops producing sweat.
## Schedule a Follow-up Appointment
Immediately after your appointment, you may notice some side effects. You could experience some pain at the injection site or have a headache. These side effects are usually mild and should dissipate within the first one to two days.

Two weeks after your initial treatment you should have a follow-up appointment. Once you’ve seen the full effect of the Botox treatment, you may notice some small spots that are still sweating. During a follow-up appointment, your nurse can perform a few touch-ups, so you have the best possible results.
