Botox is a catch-all name for several different injections that can treat cosmetic and medical concerns. They all contain the same active ingredients and work the same way. But each type has a few unique features. Here’s everything you need to know about the different types of Botox.
## How Botox Works: Botulinum Toxin
Botox smooths facial lines and wrinkles, but it doesn’t actually act on the skin. Instead, Botox targets the muscles underneath the skin. Botox injections contain botulinum toxin, a refined toxin that comes from the Clostridium bacterium. This toxin can block signals from the brain to the targeted muscle. For example, when Botox is injected into the area around your eyes, signals from the brain don’t reach that muscle. The muscle won’t move unconsciously, so the area stays relaxed. The skin over the muscle stops scrunching up around the eyes, and your crow’s feet disappear. 
## The Types of Botulinum Toxin Injections
Botox is just one kind of botulinum toxin injection, though all four types are often called Botox. Each type of Botox contains botulinum toxin and may contain other ingredients, such as a saline solution that dilutes the Botox, or complex proteins to enhance the results. Here’s a closer look at each type of injection. 

## Dysport
Dysport is a popular type of Botox. Results are visible slightly sooner than Botox, but the results may not last as long. On average, Dysport results last up to four months. The main difference between Botox and 
Dysport is the concentration of the botulinum toxin. Dysport adds significantly more saline solution, so there’s less toxin in one unit of Dysport than in one unit of Botox. This makes Dysport ideal for treating larger areas. Dysport may be more effective at treating forehead wrinkles, while Botox may be more effective at treating crow’s feet around the eyes. 

## Xeomin
Xeomin (pronounced zeo-min) is another popular type of Botox. It has FDA approval to treat frown lines or “11” lines between the brows, muscle spasms, and more. This injection contains no added proteins, reducing the risk of an allergic reaction to the injections. 

## Myobloc
Unlike Dysport, Xeomin, and Botox which are all made with botulinum toxin type A, Myobloc uses botulinum toxin type B. The main difference is that type A is approved for cosmetic and medical uses, while type B is approved for medical uses. It can treat muscle spasms, painful neck and head positions, crossed eyes, and other neuromuscular disorders. 

## Botox
Just like the brand name Band-Aid is associated with all adhesive bandages from any manufacturer, all types of botulinum injections are often called Botox. Botox was the first botulinum toxin injection approved by the FDA. It’s produced by Allergan, and the injections contain the toxin as well as protective proteins and a saline solution. It’s still the most popular botulinum toxin injection, with results lasting three to six months.
