Fine lines and wrinkles can start appearing on your skin in your 20s and 30s. Wrinkles are harmless, but many of us would prefer to have fewer wrinkles and smoother skin. So what exactly causes wrinkles?
## Age
The most common cause of facial wrinkles is age. As you get older, your skin starts to lose elasticity and loses some of its smoothness. With age, the skin also produces fewer natural oils so the skin may be dry. Skin that doesn’t get enough hydration tends to look more wrinkled.
## Sunlight
We all love a day in the sun, but ultraviolet light from the sun can actually do a lot of damage to your skin. Stress can take a toll on your physical, emotional, and mental health. It can also cause wrinkles. Stress can cause elevated blood sugar levels which damaged collagen and elastin fibers in your skin.
## Facial Expressions
Did you know your muscles are responsible for many of your facial wrinkles? Every time you make a facial expression, such as frowning, squinting, smiling, or laughing, the muscles in your face activate to make that expression. Over time, these repeated facial expressions can lead to fine lines at the corners of the eyes, between the eyebrows, on the forehead, or around the mouth. 

When you make an expression, the muscles move under the surface of the skin, forming groove on your skin. When you’re young, your skin smooths back over this groove. As the skin ages and becomes less elastic, these grooves and wrinkles don’t go away even after your face returns to a neutral position.
## Preventing Facial Wrinkles
Everyone gets wrinkles as they age. But you prevent these wrinkles from becoming deeper and more visible. Here are a few steps to keep your skin looking and feeling smooth:
Use sunscreen. If you’re not in the habit of wearing sun protection, now is the time to start. Strong UV rays damage the skin, as well as increase your risk of skin cancer. Apply sunscreen every day as part of your morning routine and reapply during the day as needed.
Use a gentle cleanser. Washing your face daily with a gentle cleanser can reduce irritation and remove dead skin.
Moisturize your skin. Hydrating your skin is the key to healthy skin. Moisturizing daily can prevent dryness and stimulate collagen production. We recommend a moisturizer with vitamin C.
